Maniac Magee Ch.14
Maniac Magee is getting used to his new life. He loves all the new things about a family that he never experienced before.
Every morning before anyone else was up Maniac Magee would take Bow wow, the Beales family dog, out for a walk. By the time he would get back Ms. Beale would be making pancakes. On Sundays the family, Ms. Beale, Amanda, the twins Hester and Lester, and Maniac, would go to church. Maniac Magee liked church because everyone was always so happy.
Maniac Magee couldn’t understand why the people living in the East End called themselves black. They were all sorts of colours like gingersnap and light fudge, but none of them were licorice coloured which to him was real black.
During the summer Maniac liked to go to the empty lot with all the other East End kids to play games. One day while he was there, Hands Down spotted him and realized he was the kid who stole the pass from him in gym. He told everyone and so they started a game of football to see if the kid was really that good. Everyone laughed at Hands Down when he chose Maniac for his team but Maniac was amazing. All the high-schoolers and junior highers went crazy trying to stop him. If the ball was anywhere near Maniac he could catch it. They played all day until Amanda came and called Maniac in for dinner.
Later people would come up to him and asked “You that Maniac?” Every time someone said that he said “I’m Jeffery, you know me.”

Maniac Magee Ch.20
The knot was brought out for Maniac and instead of trying to untie it right away he slowly turned it over just checking it out. He worked very slowly and carefully never giving a very hard tug on the string. Not many people were watching him because he was taking so long. At around lunch time everyone came back to watch and the ball of string had expanded to a big, frizzy ball. A little while later he found the end of the string. Then he was offered some butterscotch krimpets. He ate them then took a nap on the table. When he woke up he went back to work. With great skill he weaved the end of the string back through the ball. Around dinnertime a loud cheer went up because Cobble’s knot was undone.
In this chapter Maniac Magee took on the knot at Cobble’s Corner. Many people had tried to untie this knot but none had ever succeeded. The prize for whoever could untie the knot was one large pizza a week for a year, although Maniac didn’t have any use for the pizzas since he was allergic to them.

Maniac and Grayson went to a diner for dinner where Grayson started asking Maniac about black people like if they ate the same kinds of things. After dinner they went to the baseball equipment room. Grayson invited Maniac to his house for the night but Maniac said he would rather stay in the equipment room, and sleep on the chest protectors like a mattress. Then Maniac asked Grayson about his life but Grayson didn’t want to tell him. All he would say was that he lined baseball fields, lived at the Y, and that the drove a pickup truck. Just before Grayson was going to leave Maniac asked him what he wanted to be when he was a kid, and Grayson said” a baseball player”
